In the Taoist tradition, a talisman (符, fú) is far more than a decorated slip of paper. It is a form of sacred calligraphy — a composition of brushstrokes, symbols, and characters arranged according to conventions refined over many centuries.

Historically, talisman art brings together several disciplines at once: the disciplined hand of the calligrapher, the cosmology of the Taoist canon, and the material craft of pigment and paper. Cinnabar-red ink, brushed onto yellow or ochre paper, is one of the most recognizable palettes in Chinese folk and religious art.
