Reading Jade: Colour, Texture, and Traditional Meaning

For more than five thousand years, jade (玉, ) has been treasured in China above gold. To understand jade is to understand a whole way of seeing virtue, patience, and quiet strength.

Two stones, one name

"Jade" covers two mineral families:

  • Nephrite — the classic Chinese jade, including prized Hetian jade; soft in glow, deeply lustrous, wonderfully tough.
  • Jadeite — harder and often more vivid, including the famous imperial green.

Both reward the eye with a cool, waxy sheen and a subtle inner depth rather than flashy sparkle.

Reading a piece of jade

  • Colour — from mutton-fat white and green to lavender, honey, and black; even tone is prized.
  • Texture — a fine, dense grain gives that signature smooth, "oily" luster.
  • Translucency — a gentle glow when held to light suggests fine quality.
  • Workmanship — in carved pieces, look for flowing lines and thoughtful use of the stone's natural colour.

The virtue of jade

Confucius compared the noble person to jade — warm and lustrous like benevolence, firm yet gentle. This is why jade became the stone of integrity and enduring bonds, passed between generations as a quiet heirloom.

Caring for jade

  • Wear it often; skin oils deepen a nephrite's glow over time.
  • Keep it away from harsh chemicals, high heat, and hard knocks.
  • Clean gently with a soft, damp cloth.
Jade is not polished by force, but by time and touch — much like character.

We state the material and origin of each jade piece honestly on its product page, so you know exactly what you are bringing into your life. Its symbolism is shared as cultural meaning, for appreciation rather than as any promise of effect.

A note on spirit and honesty: at HE FAJIE we share these traditions as living culture and art. Everything here is offered for cultural understanding and personal reflection — never as a promise of specific real-world, medical, or financial outcomes.
